Junior Secondary Maths Workbooks

For Years 9 and 10

Sigma's Dual Pathway 'Track' Workbooks prepare a wider range of students for NCEA success

The key to the success of Sigma’s Track Maths workbooks is the dual pathway they provide for maths teachers and students - 'On Track' and 'Fast Track'.  In the first two years of secondary school the mathematical ability of students extend over a wider range compared to intermediate school. Sigma solves this issue by providing two workbooks for each year group, so that both mid-band and more able students are provided with their own maths workbook written exclusively for their ability level. Matching the teaching resource to a student's ability level is a crucial factor in the learning process.

'On Track' Workbooks

Mid-band students should use Sigma’s ‘On Track’ workbooks because they are written exclusively for them. Sigma has designed these titles to include more revision work from the previous year, allowing mid-band students to refresh their concepts and fill in any missing maths knowledge before tackling new work. This 'On Track' format allows mid-band students to study independently, complete more work, and achieve sound results in mathematics.

'Fast Track' Workbooks

More able maths students (those capable of passing NCEA Level 2-3 courses in the future) will find a wide range of interesting, relevant and challenging study material in Sigma’s ‘Fast Track’ workbooks. The 'Fast Track' pathway is aimed at helping advanced students reach Merit and Excellence levels in the subject. Starting on a 'Fast Track' workbook at the beginning of the year assumes a student has successfully completed last years maths work.

Workbook Features

Both workbooks use New Zealand based problems and feature many photographs which help students connect maths with real world situations. All junior secondary 'Track' workbooks contain about 140 pages of concentrated maths work and a full set of answers that is removable. Further features include :

  • Written to the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum objectives
  • Encompasses the Secondary Numeracy Project
  • Uses the Statistical Enquiry Cycle
  • Detailed teaching 'Instruction Boxes' on almost all pages
  • ‘See and do’ worked examples included
  • End of chapter summary tests
  • Curriculum/Chapter Links page for teacher reference

For Teachers

You already know how important it is to match a learning resource to a student's ability level in order for the student to learn and achieve well. Sigma's dual pathway 'Track’ workbook series now gives your department the scope to provide well matched homework resources to a greater number of students. If you provide students with interesting workbooks, pitched at their ability level, in their first two years of secondary school, you'll lay the foundations for them to achieve at their best level in NCEA later on.

Each Sigma ‘Track’ write-on workbook covers the following Maths curriculum strands : Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics.  The secondary numeracy project is also accommodated by these workbooks. They are an effective department-wide homework teaching resource available direct from Sigma Publications at attractive bulk purchase prices.

For Parents

Sigma Publications ‘Track’ maths workbooks allow you to do something really positive to assist your child’s secondary learning in a key subject at a crucial time. Forget expensive after school maths tutors, Sigma’s ‘Track’ workbooks are just as effective and available at a very reasonable one-off price.

Simple instruction boxes with worked examples appear at the beginning of each topic. These examples show you how to do the problems and explain the maths concepts. They make it possible for you to assist your child with the correct up-to-date techniques at home.

Selecting a workbook: 'On Track' or 'Fast Track'? - If your child needs help to catch up in maths, then select the 'On Track' workbook for their year group (or even the year before if necessary). If you have an able child who needs maths extension work to achieve merit or excellence passes, choose the 'Fast Track' title for their year group.
